WITNESS
Witness is not the figure at the centre of the image. It is the figure that stays at the edge — present, attentive, but not the subject of what is being seen.
These images do not photograph the figure. They photograph what the figure is watching. A man with a camera and a rifle stands a kilometre from a glacier. The glacier does not notice. A cheetah passes under a fig tree that has been there longer than the cheetah. Two polar bears cross a horizon of ice with no audience. The phenomenon — the mountain, the aurora, the moon, the storm — does not arrive for them. It would happen without them.
But because they are there, and because their stillness records it, the viewer is given a place to stand. The figure is not a guide. The figure is a stand-in. Where they look, the viewer looks.
The world's large moments do not arrive as performances. They arrive whether we are there or not.
